I still remember it vividly. That afternoon as I stood bewildered among all crowd of German carnival revellers holding, onto my grandfather’s hand. All around me there was mayhem. People on artistically designed floats in colourful costumes throwing sweets into the cheering crowd. I did not understand the themes of the floats. I could not connect with the crowd, their accent and why they were so intensely trying to have fun, kiss each other and use any excuse to grope.
It did not feel like fun to me.
I felt like an alien.
